StarvationBody mass can be effectively reduced if people do not eat, that is, starve. Voluntary fasting is an ancient phenomenon, and already the ancient Greek physicians recommended therapeutic fasting. People starve for different reasons, both religious and also based on different assumptions about the body cleansing, restoration, and general health improvement. Fasting can be justified only for healthy people who have too much body mass, although the current dietary specialists does not recommend fasting for weight losing, believing that better diet is with reduced calorie content and sufficient protein content. Biochemical changes in the body during starvation: • Brains need 400-570kcal daily, which is derived from glucose, • glucose stores in organism are 200-300g,so it is assumed if a man does not take a glucose, the brain is served by an energy of about 2 days, • By starving already after 12 hours, glucose neogenesis is starting, that is, the occurrence of glucose from protein (100g of protein may occur 57g glucose), • There are 4000-8000g of proteins in body, if their quantity is reduced by half, occurs life-threatening condition. • Metabolism can change during starvation and brain can get energy from other compounds, not only from glucose, • The energy required for metabolism, heat and muscular activity gives the fatty tissue • During fasting, blood decreases the neutral fat, fatty acids and cholesterol, |
